Semi-finals are set in women’s volleyball after the quarter-finals of Paris 2024 on Tuesday, 6 August at South Paris Arena. The United States and Brazil won in straight sets to set up their semi-final, a rematch of the gold-medal final from Tokyo 2020. Meanwhile Italy, in their first semi-final in women’s volleyball, will face Türkiye.
Despite dealing with injuries, Türkiye took a tight match with China. Melissa Vargas scored 42 points for Türkiye in what was a rematch of last year’s Volleyball Nations League Final. Türkiye’s coach said that the team can play better.
"Today we played with our hearts. We have a lot of injuries and I am so proud of my players. We put everything on the line to reach the semi-finals," Daniele Santarelli said.
"We didn't play amazing volleyball. We have a lot of limits, but anything can happen; we're going to the semi-finals."
The Brazilian women’s team has still yet to drop a set at Paris 2024. They had control over the entire match, and are hoping to harness their "anger" as they head into the rematch against the United States.
"We have this angriness in us. When we are playing like this, we just bring each other in — 'now it's your turn, now it's my turn.' This is what we need. That's why we need to rest because we spend a lot of energy, not only physically but mentally,” said Gabriela Braga Guimaraes.
The United States dominated from the beginning of its match against Poland. Avery Skinner stood out, ending the first game with an ace. The USA's hopes for winning back-to-back gold medals are alive and well.
"We had a really good game plan and we executed it well. Our service pressure did a lot of things to simplify what we were looking at from across the net," Team USA's Andrea Drews said after the match. "Then we just had a lot of people ready to come in and play roles when we needed. It was a good example of team volleyball tonight.”
Despite strong finishes at the world championships and coming into Paris 2024 ranked first in the world, Italy hasn’t made it past the quarter-finals at an Olympic Games. That changes this week, as the Italian team dominated Serbia to win 3-0.
"It's a big emotion for all of us, but now we have to think about the match that's ahead of us," Alessia Orro said afterwards. "We know it won't be anything like the one in pool play. Türkiye will be super motivated and determined to win and make it to the final, so we'll need to be ready to fight until the last point. We're getting better at every match, but I still believe there's room for us to improve,."
