His gravity-defying routine was solid, landing him a score of 63.090 to finish 1.2 points ahead of second place.
“I was quite anxious and nervous,” he said about going into the competition.
“My coach helped me a lot. I was also listening to music before my routines. I felt I was fully prepared to show my best today.”
And with that, he did.

Teammate Langyu also said “I’m super happy with the medal,” but added that he “put a lot of pressure on myself [today] and as a result I wasn’t able to perform to my best today. But I think that's completely normal, because we all make mistakes”.
And now, to celebrate, he comically said: “I just want to eat as much as possible."
France’s Pierre Gouzou had a notable performance in front of a home crowd that erupted with a sea of cheers and French flags when he hit his final trick.
The final took place in front of a loud and lively audience at the Bercy Arena, where just more than 24 hours prior, Simone Biles clinched a historic all-around gold in the women’s artistic gymnastics.
