That’s why they call him “Harrie Hat-trick”.

The Netherlands’ Harrie Lavreysen secured a third gold medal of these Olympic Games after pipping Australia's Matthew Richardson to the line by 0.056 seconds in the men’s keirin final.

The duo were clear of the pack as Australia's Matthew Glaetzer took home bronze ahead of a big crash featuring the remaining three track cycling finalists.

Team GB’s Jack Carlin required treatment after the collision with Japan's Nakano Shinji and Muhammad Shah Firdaus Sahrom of Malaysia, but eventually managed to walk away from the track.

Gold for Lavreysen followed the titles he defended in the team and individiual sprints, making the now five-time Olympic champion the standout star of the track cycling at the National Velodrome.

After Carlin, Richardson and Lavreysen won their respective quarter-finals on Sunday morning, the semi-finals an hour later proved another tight affair.

Carlin won his semi ahead of Glaetzer, while Lavreysen was beaten to the line by Richardson shortly after.

It was roles reversed in the final, however, with Lavreysen having the inside line on the final lap and able to cross just head of Richardson.

And there was drama behind them, with the three-way crash taking place right at the end. The good news though was that the trio all eventually walked away from the incident.

Victory for Lavreysen meanwhile was the Netherlands’ 15th gold medal overall at Paris 2024.
