At her Olympic debut, Hungary’s Viviana Marton came out on top of the women’s -67kg final to clinch Olympic gold with a 2-0 victory over Serbia’s Aleksandra Perisic.

Composed, focused and strong throughout the fight, Marton held a steady lead on her opponent, posting a decisive 7-1 and 4-2 to land herself on top of the podium before there was cause for a third round.

“It was all like a dream,” Marton said.

“I didn’t care about anyone or anything. I said to myself, I am the strongest, the fastest, the best and I trusted myself. I knew how much I trained and that I was physically the best.”

The 18-year-old could not contain her excitement after she was announced as the Olympic champion, letting out a triumphant scream before ecstatically dancing around the mat as Hungarian flags waved through the stands at the iconic Grand Palais.

Evidently, this is just the beginning for Marton, who said: “I want to end every Olympics like this.”

Perisic, who recently came out on top of the 2023 Taiyuan Grand Prix to take the gold medal, was not thrilled with settling for the silver.

“I came here to win the gold medal,” she said. “I’m very emotional right now. I will prepare for my next Games. I’m not happy.

"However, it’s still a silver medal for my country. I’m very proud for my people and my family. See you in four years.”

Earlier in the night, USA’s Kristina Teachout defeated People’s Republic of China’s Song Jie in the first bronze medal match, landing herself on the podium as the youngest member of the United States’ taekwondo team in Paris.

“This is the culmination of everything that’s important to me and all that I’ve put into my craft,” she said after taking the bronze.

“Right after I’m done with this, I’m going to go finish my high school.”

Belgium’s Sarah Chaari then came back from a 14-point deficit in round one of the second bronze medal match to clinch the final piece of Olympic hardware, over Uzbekistan’s Ozoda Sobirjonova.

“It’s an enormous achievement. The level here is so high and to be amongst the best, it’s incredible,” Chaari said.
