Italy’s Thomas Ceccon now has an Olympic gold medal to add to his world record and world championship in the men’s 100m backstroke. Ceccon was followed by Xu Jiayu from the People's Republic of China for the silver medal, with Team USA’s Ryan Murphy picking up the bronze.

The race was tight from the beginning, with Ceccon, Xu and Murphy taking the lead at some point in the final 50 metres. Ceccon out-touched the others, and with that won his second medal of the Olympic Games Paris 2024. He also won bronze with the 4x100m freestyle relay team for Italy earlier this week.

Ceccon finished in 52 seconds flat, with Xu swimming the race at 52.32 and Murphy at 52.39. In fact, the entire field came in at less than 53 seconds.
