Following a memorable round 3 competition, the Olympic Games Paris 2024 men’s surfing resumed Thursday, 1 August.

And while there weren't the showstopping barrels we saw earlier in the week, the conditions at Teahupo’o offered overhead sets with clean faces intermixed with the occasional bigger barreling sets rolling through. The conditions made for a stellar competition with lucky spectators crowded on the beach to cheer on the Olympians at the end of the road in French Tahiti.

The eight-man quarter-finals were decided over four heats, with countrymen pitted against countrymen — an unintentional result of seeding.

At the end of the four rounds, the surfers advancing into the Olympic Games semi-finals and into medal contention are:

Heat 1: Peru’s Alonso Correa vs. France’s Kauli Vaast

Heat 2: Brazil's Gabriel Medina versus Australia’s Jack Robinson

Semi-finals and the medal matches are scheduled for Saturday, August 3. See the full surfing schedule here.

Highlight of men’s Olympic Games surfing quarter-finals

Surfing heat 1: Peru’s Alonso Correa advances over Japan’s Inaba Reo

Surfing fast and hitting the lip with authority, the Peruvian Correa (10.50) kept his Olympic dreams alive by surfing with flow and taking every opportunity to smash turns and bash the lips of the wave. Japan's Inaba Reo found an impressive tube ride that saw the goofy-footed surfer take off under the lip, stand up in the barrel and completely disappear behind the curtain for the top wave score of the heat, a 7.33. Inaba finished his Olympic bid with a combined score of 10.16.

Surfing heat 2: France’s Kauli Vaast advances over compatriot Joan Duru

The France vs. France matchup saw a return to tube riding as Teahupo’o turned back on. Local knowledge served Vaast well, as the Tahitian linked up deadly combinations of tubes and turns, including a barrel that he flowed into a lookback, power-gouge turn that the announcers dubbed "the turn of the contest,” for a single wave score of 8.00 on his way to a total heat score of 15.33. His French teammate Joan Duru was on the better end of the exchanges at the heat's halfway point thanks to a 7.50, but was unable to recover the lead, finishing with a 12.33.

Surfing heat 3: Brazil’s Gabriel Medina advances over compatriot João Chianco

In another matchup of compatriots, the three-time world champion from Brazil, Medina, took on his countryman João Chianca. The heat was Medina’s from the start, as he advanced with relative ease, scoring an 8.10 for a deep and intense barrel leading into a fully committed layback carve. Medina finished with a total heat score of 14.77.

Chianco hunted down some deep tubes and dug into radical backside turns to finish with a total heat score of 9.33.

Surfing heat 4: Australian Jack Robinson advances over compatriot Ethan Ewing

The final quarter-final heat saw two of the competition's best waves ridden. Robinson, the number three-ranked surfer from Australia, added a 7.33 to his top wave score of 8.0 to earn the win with a combined score of 15.33.

Despite his Olympic dreams coming to an end, Ethan Ewing surfed a showstopping wave, managing a tight top turn in the pocket before pulling into a long tube ride, exiting, and then carving powerfully down the face to end his ride for the heat's top single wave score (and highest wave score of the day) of 8.33. Ewing finished with a combined score of 13.00.
