Paris 2024 Paralympic Games: Preview for 31 August with Timothée Adolphe, the Portal Brothers, Iona Winnifrith and Jessica Long in action

Saturday, 31 August marks a big day of competition at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games with 15 different sports in action and gold up for grabs in seven: para archery, para athletics, para track cycling, para swimming, para table tennis, para taekwondo and shooting para sport.

The third day of competition will feature the final of three days of para taekwondo competition with three gold medals up for grabs. The thrilling wheelchair rugby and wheelchair basketball competitions continue with nonstop action as competitors work to advance through the preliminary rounds. We'll also see an incredible 15 newly-minted gold medallists by days end in para swimming. It'll be a day to remember at Paris 2024.

Top French athletes to watch

The first French medals in Para athletics could arrive on Saturday, 31 August, starting with the 400m T11, where hopes are high for Timothée Adolphe (guided by Jeffrey Lami) and Trésor Makunda (guided by Lucas Mathonat) to make their way into finals and onto the podium. Dimitri Jozwicki is another podium hopeful competing in the 100m T38.

In Para track cycling, the French will be in the mix for the 1,000 m C1-3 time trial where Alexandre Léauté is the big favourite. Thomas Peyroton-Dartet will also be in the mix, with Gatien Le Rousseau and Kévin Le Cunff starting C4 indivudual pursuit and Dorian Foulon in the C5 individual pursuit.

On the Para swimming side of the programme, brothers Kylian Portal and Alex Portal will compete in the 400 m freestyle S13 where expectations are high. Another medal hope will be found in Châteauroux with Gaëlle Edon, entered in the 10m air pistol SH1 event of Para sport shooting.

In Para table tennis competitions, look for the French pairs Florian Merrien/Flora Vautier (XD7) and Clément Berthier/Esteban Herrault (MD14) competing in the semi-finals. While a medal is already assured by both pairs, two challenges against China await them.

In Boccia, the French leader Sonia Heckel will once again go against Thailand's Ladamanee Kla-Han.

Top events to watch

Saturday, 31 August marks the final day of Para taekwondo action featuring a full day of competition. The programme includes the men's K44 +80kg gold medal match, where Team USA's Evan Medell will be a favorite to win.

In the Paralympic sport's debut at Tokyo 2020, Medell won bronze despite breaking his foot in the semi-final. He is hoping to upgrade the color of his medal at Paris 2024.

In Para swimming, Great Britain’s Iona Winnifrith will make her highly-anticipated Paralympic debut. The 13-year-old is already a double European champion. She'll swim in the women's 200m individual medley SM7, chasing her first Paralympic medal.

Also look for the Brazilian swimmer Gabriel dos Santos Araujo, aka "Gabrielzihno", looking to defend his title in the 50m backstroke S2. Team USA’s 16-time Paralympic gold medallist Jessica Long is also set to compete in the women’s S8 100m backstroke, getting her Paris 2024 Paralympics campaign underway.

The six-time Paralympian will also compete in the S8 200m individual medley (1 September), S8 400m freestyle (4 September) and S8 100m butterfly (7 September), as she looks to extend her incredible medal haul in France.

In Para athletics**,** the Dutchwoman Fleur Jong will be one of the favorites competing in the T64 long jump., while Team USA's Susannah Scaroni looks to streak ahead of the competition in the women's T54 5,000m.
