US para swimming legend Jessica Long missed out on a podium spot in her first final at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games in the women’s 100m backstroke S8 on Saturday (31 August).

Long touched the wall in sixth place clocking one minute, 21.28 (1:21.28) with Great Britain’s Alice Tai storming to victory in 1:09.06. Viktoriia Ishchiulova finished second in 1:14.97 with Mira Jeanne Maack rounding out the podium in 1:18.36.

Making her sixth appearance at the quadrennial showpiece, Long will be looking to add to her incredible haul of 29 medals, including 16 gold.

The double amputee made a splash 20 years ago winning three gold medals when she was just 12 years old in Athens 2004.

Swimming icon Trischa Zorn – with an incredible 55 medals including 41 gold – is the only American Paralympian with more silverware than Long at the multi-sport showcase.

The 32-year-old Long, who boasts an astonishing 54 world championship medals, still has a few more shots at adding to her incredible tally as she is scheduled to compete in the S8 400m freestyle, 100m butterfly and the 200m individual medley SM8 at these Games.
