Needing a two-goal win against Spain in their final group game to leapfrog Tokyo 2020 silver Argentina on the points table, the Hockeyroos pulled through thanks to Steph Kershaw and Kaitlin Nobbs’ strikes in the final five minutes.
The last-gasp win helped the Hockeyroos, ranked fourth in the world, avoid European heavyweights Belgium and Germany in the top eight. However, the Hockeyroos can’t afford to take world No. 8 China lightly.
At Tokyo 2020, the Hockeyroos sailed through the group stage only to be upset by another Asian hockey team, India, in the top eight.
Australia head coach Katrina Powell, who was a part of the gold medal-winning Hockeyroos sides from Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000, will particularly have her hands full in the dugout,
The Australia vs China hockey match at Paris 2024 is all set to reunite Powell with Alyson Annan, her Hockeyroos team-mate from both Atlanta and Sydney and currently the head coach of the Chinese women’s hockey team.
Interestingly, Ric Charlesworth, who coached the Hockeyroos to the gold medals at the Atlanta and Sydney Games, is assisting Annan in the Chinese national setup.
China have emerged as a rising force in women’s hockey under the mentorship of the two Australian legends and recently won the gold medal at the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou to punch their ticket to Paris.
The Chinese women’s hockey team finished fourth in Group A to advance to the top eight and will be looking for its second Olympic medal after a silver at Beijing 2008.
The Australian women, on the other hand, were Olympic champions at Seoul 1988, Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000 but have failed to progress beyond the quarter-finals since.

Since 2013, Australia and China have crossed paths 27 times. The Hockeyroos have won 13 while China have seven victories. The remaining seven were drawn.
The Hockeyroos came out on top by a commanding 6-0 margin in the group stage at Tokyo 2020, which was the two team’s last meeting on the Olympic stage.
However, four of China’s seven wins have come in their last six meetings against the Hockeyroos. The last time the two played each other was at the Perth International Festival of Hockey 2024 in April this year. China won the contest by a 3-2 margin.
