The Australian men’s and women’s water polo teams competed at the Paris 2024 Olympics with competitions held at the Paris Aquatic Centre from July 27.

The Aussie Stingers won a silver at the Paris 2024 Olympics water polo competition for their fourth medal at the Summer Games after two bronze (Beijing 2008 and London 2012) and a gold at Sydney 2000.

The men’s team, meanwhile, finished eighth in its competition in Paris. The Aussie Sharks’ best at the Olympics is fifth, achieved at Los Angeles 1984 and London 2012.

The Australian women’s water polo team made the final by beating the defending champions USA in the semi-finals. However, Spain managed to edge the Stingers 11-9 in a closely-contested gold medal match.

At the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, the Stingers finished fifth.

Zoe Arancini, 32, in her third Summer Games appearance, led the Stingers squad in Paris while Keesja Gofers returned for her third outing at the Summer Games.

The women’s water polo competition at the 2024 Summer Games was a 10-team affair. Australia topped their group, which included Tokyo bronze medallists Hungary, the Netherlands, Canada and the People’s Republic of China.

The Aussie Sharks, meanwhile, failed to end their wait for an Olympic medal. They were defeated in the quarter-finals against the USA after a penalty shootout. The result, however, was slightly better than their ninth-place finish at Tokyo 2020.

Nathan Power, Blake Edwards and his brother Lachy were the only returning Olympians in the Sharks squad in Paris. The remaining 10 members of the team made their Olympic debuts.
