In the knockout stages, the USA defeated Japan in the quarter-finals and Germany in the semi-finals - both by a 1-0 margin.
The Brazil women’s football team made it to the knockout stages by being one of the two best third-placed teams from the group stages. They had lost two of their three matches in Group C after beating Nigeria 1-0 in their opening match.
Brazil produced two big performances in the knockout stages, though, firstly beating host nation France in the quarter-finals. They later overcame Spain 4-2 in the semi-finals to make the final for the third time at the Olympics.
USA vs Brazil women’s football head to head
This is the third time USA and Brazil are facing each other in the Olympic women’s football finals. At Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008, the USWNT defeated Brazil to bag a gold medal.
Overall, these teams have played 40 competitive matches and the USWNT have won 32 of those. Brazil emerged victorious only on three occasions.
Since the introduction of women’s football to the Olympic curriculum at Atlanta 1996, the USA have won four of the seven Olympic tournaments. Last edition in Tokyo, they won a bronze medal beating Australia in the playoff.
Brazil, meanwhile, have won two silver medals at the Summer Games.
