Friends, families and fans rallied together to support one of the many anticipated events at this year's Olympic Games. The men’s triathlon – which was originally scheduled for Tuesday morning – created a vibrant sea of spectators draped in their country’s colours. It was an atmosphere not to be missed.

Waving the flags of their nation and coffee cups in the air, supporters lined the streets of Paris on Wednesday morning to watch the men’s triathlon. Cheering crowds lingered from earlier that morning when 56 women triathletes battled it out for Olympic medals. The women's triathlon set a high standard for the ambience at this event, that's for sure!

The loud and rainbow coloured backdrop created by hundreds of fans was relatively calm and collected before the start alarm sounded. This all suddenly changed once the first contender made a splash into the Seine River to begin the first leg of the race. Pools of people stood on top of buildings, landmarks, street poles and even public toilets to catch a glimpse of this extraordinary sight.

The stands in the arena quickly erupted into what can only be described as a crescendo of support as the athletes front-crawled their way to the second triathlon discipline: the cycling part.

Drenched in water and determination, the athletes moved onto their transition area. Despite what you'd probably think, these areas were also covered with supporters (as much as they could be without getting a police escort). Screaming, shouting, crying, cheering, clapping, and cowbells is all that would be heard for the next 2 hours.

Superheroes applauded by the crowd during the whole race

The cycling portion of the event took off down into the Avenue des Champs-Élysées. The hum of bikes and whizzing wheels passed through the streets of Paris along a scenic route that probably wasn't captured by the focused athletes. Nevertheless it was a sight that so many supporters soaked up, in between cheering on the groups of cyclists that bolted past.

As the race continued, the levels of anticipation amongst the audience grew bigger and bigger. They watched and waited for the next bikes to pass by and almost everyone had a phone or camera in the air ready to capture these incredible moments.

"Everybody gathers to support the athletes. We have to do it if we can, it's a fantastic atmosphere", Océane, a French supporter, says.

Walls and watching areas crawled with people staggering to get a closer look at the action. Some areas were so jam packed that the only thing you could see were floating flags and hands in the sky. Clumped together in sweaty mosh pits, strangers are emalgumating in a sense of shared support for these Olympians. This is not for the faint-hearted!

Despite the colour of the paint draped across the faces of fans, they cheer on every single contender. This no longer feels like a competition, but a space of community and understanding in something bigger. This is sport.

A beautiful event concluded by a beautiful finish

Now fans are shuffling closer to the stands as competitors take to the pavement in the final leg of their event: the running part. Following the same route they just cycled, the triathletes pace their way to the finish line that's just four laps away.

Pressure builds and sounds reach mental decibels as the race comes to a close. There is constant chatter and clapping and a unison banging on street signs forms down the entire line of supports. This creates a loud buzz and electric vibe that no doubt spreads across the entire city.

The fierce competition is no doubt alive, however the carried and shared support of every country coloured tri-suit is nothing but amazing to witness. People are crying with joy as their nations athletes step one foot in front of the other making it closer and closer to the finish line.

"I tried to watch some indoor events when I could, but here, outdoors, it's unbelievable", our spectator admits.

Finally, Alex Yee takes gold in just the last 200m of the race and everyone in the crowd stands to watch. People applause every athlete as they collapse across the finish line. The National anthem of Great Britain plays to mark the end of this triumphant event.

An atmosphere of pure global unity and respect oozed throughout the entire day. This Olympic triathlon embodies everything the Games represent and more.

If you want to be a part of this unreal outdoor atmosphere, you can catch the mixed relay event on August 5th. If it's anything like the events from this day, it is not to be missed!
