American athletes to watch on 7 August at Paris 2024: Katie Moon, A’ja Wilson and the women’s basketball team, and Hampton Morris
The U.S. has a proud history in women’s pole vault, winning a medal in every Olympics since it was introduced at Sydney 2000 except for one. Katie Moon kept up that tradition at Tokyo 2020, and now she’s back in the final.
Since winning Olympic gold, she’s won two World Championships in the pole vault. Tune in to see if she can add to her impressive medal collection.
Speaking of teams who collect medals, the U.S. women’s basketball team will be back in action on their quest to become the first team in Olympic history to win eight straight gold medals. They face Nigeria, the first African team to make the women’s basketball quarterfinals in two decades. Two-time WNBA MVPs Breanna Stewart and A’ja Wilson are averaging an identical 20.3 points per game so far at the Olympics, and have teamed up to make the lives of American opponents quite difficult. Can they keep the streak going in the quarterfinals?
Hampton Morris holds the junior record in the clean and jerk for 61kg. He will be the last person to lift on Wednesday, and hopes to be the first American man to win an Olympic medal since two men won medals at Los Angeles 1984.
