EURO champions Spain started their men's football Olympic campaign with a 2-1 victory over Uzbekistan.

Spain are looking to complete a summer double to remember after winning the UEFA European Championships, and opened their bid for gold at Paris 2024 with a hard-fought win at the Parc des Princes in Paris.

Marc Pubill scored Spain’s opening goal in the first half before Uzbekistan, runners-up at the 2024 AFC U-23 Asian Cup, equalised from the penalty spot thanks to Eldor Shomurodov.

Spain regained the lead shortly after the hour-mark, but only after Sergio Gomez saw his penalty saved in the 59th minute.

Just three minutes later, Gomez made amends when scoring from 12 yards out, virtually from the penalty spot he had just missed from.

Spain are aiming to win their first men’s football gold since 1992, which they won on home soil in Barcelona.

Next for Spain is a meeting with Dominican Republic on 27 July, when Uzbekistan also take on Egypt.

Spain’s final Group C game is against 2023 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations runners-up Egypt on 30 July, when Dominican Republic face Uzbekistan.
