Paris 2024 Olympics rugby sevens: Australia men and women drawn in Pool B - group details
The Australian men’s and women’s rugby sevens teams discovered their respective draws for the Paris 2024 Olympics on Sunday.
At Paris 2024, the men’s rugby sevens competition will be held from July 24 to 27 while the women’s tournament is scheduled from July 28 to 30. The men’s gold medal match on July 27 will be the first team sport gold medal awarded at the upcoming Summer Games.
A total of 12 teams will compete in each of the men’s and women’s tournaments. They will be divided into three pools of four teams each for the group stage with the top
Having been crowned SVNS series champions earlier this month, the Australian women’s rugby sevens team has been drawn in Pool B with Ireland, Great Britain and Olympic debutants South Africa.
Australia were the first women’s rugby sevens Olympic champions after beating New Zealand for the gold medal at Rio 2016.
Tokyo 2020 champions New Zealand, the 2023-24 SVNS League winners, are in Pool A while hosts France in Pool C.
In the men’s competition, Australia are also in Pool B with Tokyo 2020 bronze medallists Argentina, Samoa and Kenya. Two-time defending champions Fiji are in Pool C with hosts France.
The Australian men’s rugby sevens team has never won a medal at the Olympics. At Rio 2026, Australia finished eighth and came seventh at Tokyo 2020.
Teams were allocated into their pools based on their Olympic seedings, with the first ranked team placed in pool A, second in pool B, third in pool C, fourth in pool C, fifth in pool B, sixth in pool A and so on.
The Olympic seedings were determined by the combined points gained by teams in the World Sevens Series 2023 and SVNS 2024, as well as performances in the Challenger Series and other World Rugby-sanctioned tournaments for teams not competing in the SVNS Series.
All rugby sevens matches at Paris 2024 will be played at the iconic Stade de France.
