The Australian women’s football team suffered its first group stage exit at the Summer Games since Sydney 2000 after failing to make the quarter-finals at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The Matildas, who finished fourth at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, were drawn in a tough Group B with four-time Olympic champions United States, Rio 2016 gold medallists Germany and Zambia.

  • Group A: France, Colombia, Canada, New Zealand
  • Group B: United States, Zambia, Germany, Australia
  • Group C: Spain, Japan, Nigeria, Brazil

Women’s football at Paris 2024 was a 12-team affair with the sides divided into three groups of four for the preliminary stage.

After single-legged round-robin matches, the top two football teams from each group and the two best third-placed teams across all groups advanced to the quarter-finals.

Searching for their maiden podium finish in Paris, the Stephanie Catley-led side slumped to a 3-0 Germany in the first match before pulling off a miraculous late turnaround against Zambia in the second. However, a narrow 2-1 loss to the USA saw them finish third in the group.

Though all three third-placed teams - Australia from Group B, Colombia from Group A and Brazil from Group C - finished with three points each, the Matildas missed the cut for the quarter-finals based on goal difference.
