Australia’s Ethan Ewing will be one of the four surfers from his country to take part at the Paris 2024 Olympics surfing events, which start from July 28.
Surfing events in the upcoming Olympics will take place at the Teahupo'o reef pass, Tahiti, French Polynesia.
Ewing rose to fame by winning the World Surfing League (WSL) junior world championships in 2016 and has since established himself as one of Australia’s foremost surfers.
Helen Ewing, Ethan’s mother, is regarded as a pioneer in women’s surfing in Australia. She won the prestigious Bells Beach Pro in 1983 and 40 years later, Ethan too surfed to glory at the same event.
That victory helped Ethan finish second in the WSL Championship Tour 2023, his best finish since turning pro in 2018. Previously, he had also won the J Bay Open 2022 in South Africa.
Ethan Ewing qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympics having finished top five in the World Surf League (WSL) end-of-season rankings in 2023.
In the men’s event at Paris 2024, Ethan Ewing, currently ranked fifth in the world, will go up against 23 other top surfers from around the world. The list includes fellow Irukandji Jack Robinson, who won the Tahiti Pro at Teahupo'o last year.
South Africa’s Jordy Smith and Japan’s Kanoa Igarashi are some of the other top names to look out for.
Surfing made its debut at the Olympics at Tokyo 2020, where Australia’s Owen Wright won a bronze medal in the men’s event.
