History beckons Lovlina Borgohain in the Paris 2024 Olympics boxing tournament on Sunday.
Lovlina will go into her women’s 75kg quarter-final bout against the People’s Republic of China’s Li Qian with a chance at becoming the first Indian boxer to win two Olympic medals.

If she wins the match and makes the semi-finals, Lovlina Borgohain will be assured a medal. In Olympic boxing, two bronze medals are awarded with two losing semi-finalists each receive a bronze.
At Tokyo 2020, Lovlina won the bronze in the women’s 69kg category to become only the third Indian boxer after Vijender Singh and Mary Kom to win a medal at the Olympics.
However, her pet 69kg has since been scrapped from the Olympic boxing weight classes, prompting her to move up to the 75kg. The Assam pugilist has adapted well to her new division and is the reigning world champion in the same.
The only seeded Indian boxer at the ongoing Summer Games, Lovlina Borgohain started her campaign with a 5-0 unanimous win against Sunniva Hofstad of Norway earlier this week.
Top seeded Li Qian, however, is expected to be a far tougher prospect for Lovlina to overcome.
Li Qian is a two-time Olympic medallist with a silver from Tokyo 2020 and a bronze from Rio 2016, both in the 75kg. She is also a former world champion, a two-time Asian champion and the reigning Asian Games champion.
In fact, Lovlina Borgohain was at the receiving end during the Asian Games final last year where she went down 5-0 to Li Qian and settled for a silver.
Lovlina Borgohain is the only Indian boxing challenge remaining at Paris 2024. Nikhat Zareen, Amit Panghal, Jaismine Lamboria, Preeti Pawar and Nishant Dev have all been ousted.
