The modern pentathlon events ended at Paris 2024 with victory for Hungary's Michelle Gulyas at the Château de Versailles. Gulyas delivered a record-breaking performance, amassing 1,461 points to set a new world record.

France's Elodie Clouvel won her second Olympic silver in the event (having finished second at Rio 2016) and became the first French athlete to win two Olympic medals in the sport.

Bronze went to Seong Seungmin of the Republic of Korea, the first woman from her nation to win an Olympic medal in the sport.

Gulyas, 24, was a picture of focus across the five disciplines, especially in the final laser run, where the stakes were highest. Competing in front of around 15,000 fans, she maintained her composure and executed her strategy with precision.

"It was tough," Gulyas admitted, reflecting on the race, "but I knew what I had to do, and I stayed focused on my shooting."

"You always need help to win these things, and you should always ask for help even if you are very strong and tough because this is what I’ve felt during the years, and still, I’m here with an Olympic medal," she added.

For France’s Clouvel, the silver medal was a bittersweet near-miss. Entering the laser run with a 13-second advantage, Clouvel was poised to take the gold in front of her home crowd. However, a series of misses at the shooting stations saw her advantage dwindle, leaving her to settle for silver with 1,452 points — nine points shy of Gulyas.

Clouvel remained gracious, acknowledging her Hungarian rival's exceptional performance: "Finishing in second place, winning silver, it’s my place today. Congratulations to Michelle for the amazing shooting."

Seong secured the bronze, marking her Olympic debut with a podium finish. The young pentathlete was thrilled with her performance and is excited for the future.

"It feels great to have this bronze medal," she said, "but I still want to get the gold, so I am looking forward to the next Games."

The three medallists shared a heart-warming moment of friendship on the podium.

A beautiful moment to end the modern pentathlon at Paris 2024, the Palace of Versailles adding a layer of grandeur to what was already a spectacular event.
