As group stages begin to come to an end and teams fight for their spots in the quarter-finals of Olympic hockey at Paris 2024, tensions are rising and leaders begin to emerge.

Belgium, reigning Olympic champions for the men, have maintained a perfect record throughout the tournament, going four for four and ending India’s perfect streak after coming from behind in the 44th minute to win 2-1.

Belgium’s Felix Denayer hit a major milestone on Thursday, 1 August in this match, playing his 400th international game and joining the club of only seven other players in history to reach that number.

Netherlands, the women’s reigning champions, have also managed to maintain a perfect record, most recently defeating People’s Republic of China 3-0 on 31 July.

Australia and Argentina’s women's teams refused to let go of their perfect records as they went head to head and concluded their match with a nail-biting 3-3 draw on 1 August after Argentina held the lead for most of the game.

Game of the day: Australia and Argentina draw 3-3

Both Australia and Argentina’s women’s teams began day six of the Games undefeated and were not going to let anything end their streak — not even another undefeated team.

Ten minutes into the match, Argentina was up two and it looked like they might just run away with the record, but after goals in the 37th and 45th minutes by the Hockeyroos, the scoreboards were even and it was anyone's game.

Argentina’s Maria Granatto found the back of the net next to bring Argentina into the lead as the clock wound down, but Australia’s Mariah Williams wasn’t going to let them run away with it and sunk an equalizer in the 60th minute to end the game 3-3.

Both teams will continue onto day seven of the Olympic Games with undefeated records, holding onto the top two places in the women’s Pool B.

Player of the day: John-John Dohmen’s dream-crushing goal

The Belgian men have been dominating hockey at Paris 2024, and on Thursday it was John-John Dohmen who sunk a tie-breaking goal to defeat India 2-1 for what was their first loss of the Games thus far.

India’s forward Abhishek began the scoring for the day, but in the 33rd minute Belgium’s Thibeau Stockbroekx tied up the score, then and set up Dohmen for the tie- breaking shot in the 44th minute in his world-record extending 478th international match.

Belgium, as the reigning world champions, are now four for four, setting themselves up nicely as they attempt to defend their Olympic title.
