The Stade Yves-du-Manoir saw hockey highs and lows on Wednesday 31 July, as a home crowd packed the stands to watch the French women take on Germany, and although they ultimately fell to the Die Danas, they were able to celebrate two home goals.
Belgium, the Netherlands, Australia and Argentina’s women’s teams came out on top at the end of the day, and the four will continue to dance, as they have maintained their status as undefeated at the Olympic Games Paris 2024.
For the Netherlands, though, there was not much of a crowd to celebrate with, as a storm forced an evacuation and they played People’s Republic of China in front of an empty stadium, just as the Spanish men did against South Africa.

The tension was palpable at Stade Yves-du-Manoir, as Great Britain and South Africa’s women’s teams both looked to rally from back-to-back losses. With the score tied at the half, it could have been anyone's game.
A 42nd-minute goal by Team GB’s Hannah French put the Brits in the lead in the third quarter, and from there they were able to hang on until the end for a 2-1 victory.
“We're really pleased to get the result. We came out there to get three points, and we got three points. So hopefully we can build on that,” French said after the match.
“We just wanted to go out there and play like we know we can. We're really disappointed with our performance against Australia. We were confident we could put a performance out there today, and if we did we could win the game.”
Team GB’s women play the United States next on 1 August.
Nike Lorez had an outstanding day for Germany, playing a key role in their 5-1 win over France with a hat-trick.
After losing their previous match 2-1 to the Netherlands, the Die Danas built a 3-0 lead over France and were able to “enjoy it for a second,” Lorenz said.
"It was a fun game. It was fun to play in front of the crowd, the anthem was fun already, and to see them [France] score obviously was also [fun].”
The country has 10 total Olympic hockey medals, the most recent being a bronze at Rio 2016, so with their current third-place standing they are hoping to land on the podium once again.
“There's a big, big wish [for] all of us to win another medal. But I think everyone knows how hard it is and how much work you have to put into it,” Lorenz’s teammate Charlotte Stapenhorst said.
The German women are planning on doing everything in their power to land themselves on that podium.
