Hungary held on to win gold as Japan forced overtime in men's team épée at the Grand Palais on Friday, 2 August. Japan won silver after a tight match at Olympic Games Paris 2024.
Japan had been trailing Hungary, but Kano Koki's leg in the seventh period helped his team get back into the match. Hungary's David Nagy put his team back on the top going into the final period. Kano was called upon again to face Gergely Siklosi. The Japanese team had a passivity warning on it, requiring the team to score, or be scored upon, every 60 seconds.
In the final period, Japan, which won gold at Tokyo 2020, tied up as time expired. Overtime was sudden death, with the first touch winning. Siklosi quickly scored, securing the gold for Hungary.
For Japan's Kano, this adds to his medal total, as he won individual épée gold earlier this week, beating France's Yannick Borel in the final.
Earlier Friday, the team from Czechia beat France in a tight bout for the bronze medal.
Gold: Hungary
Silver: Japan
