Paris 2024 Diving: All results, as Chen Yiwen wins women's 3m springboard, seventh diving gold for People's Republic of China
Under the bright lights of the Aquatics Centre in Saint-Denis, the roar of the crowd reverberated through the air as Chen Yiwen clinched yet another diving gold for the People's Republic of China on Friday (9 August) at Paris 2024.
This time, it was in the women’s 3-meter springboard, marking China’s seventh gold in diving at these Games. With a total score of 376.00 points from her five dives, she secured the gold with a margin that reflected her superiority.
“I was under a big amount of pressure, but I just pretended that I wasn’t,” Chen said with a smile. “I fought. I am satisfied with the performance. Compared to my training I could have done a little better, but to do that at the Olympic Games is good. It is a relief. It is not easy to win.”
With only one event remaining, the Chinese diving team is now on the precipice of an unprecedented sweep—an accomplishment that has never been achieved.
Maddison Keeny of Australia, who took home the silver, gave a valiant effort. Her final dive, a forward two and a half somersaults with two twists, earned the highest single dive score of the day at 78.6 points. Yet, it wasn’t enough to close the gap on Chen, who proved to be unbeatable.
Chen’s teammate, Chang Yani rounded out the podium with the bronze. A shaky first dive saw her at the bottom of the standings, but with each subsequent dive, Chang clawed her way back. By the time her final dive scored an impressive 75 points, she had secured her place among the medalists, bringing China yet another reason to celebrate.
As the diving events at Paris 2024 draw to a close, all eyes will now turn to the men’s 10-meter platform—the final event that stands between China and a historic sweep of all eight diving golds. If they succeed, it will be a moment of sporting history, a crowning achievement for a nation that has made the diving pool its own.
