Paris 2024 Canoe sprint: All results, as Lisa Carrington wins iconic eighth Olympic gold with Olympic best in women's K1 500m
New Zealand's Lisa Carrington is simply unbeatable.
Carrington, a name synonymous with excellence in the world of canoe sprint, clinched her eighth Olympic gold medal on 10 August, with a new Olympic best in the women's single kayak 500m final at Paris 2024.
The Olympic Games Paris 2024 have seen the 35-year-old in unstoppable form. Three days, three events, three golds—each victory reinforcing her status as one of the greatest athletes of all time. Carrington clinched gold in the women’s K4 500m on 8 August and K2 500m on 9 August.
The latest win ties her with the German great, Birgit Fischer making her the most decorated canoe athlete in Olympic history. Yet, beyond the medals, it is Carrington’s love for her sport and pursuit of perfection that define her legacy.
“It’s amazing. The goal is always to win, but it’s more than the win for us. As a team, it’s about doing amazing things. It’s more than medals, the people behind it are everything. It’s nice to remember why I do it, and I was just trying to do that today," Carrington said about her eighth gold.
The race itself was a testament to Carrington's experience and brilliance.
Hungarian Tamara Csipes, a formidable rival, surged ahead in the early stages, leading by 0.18 seconds at the halfway mark. But Carrington, calm and composed, found another gear. With every stroke, she closed the gap, ultimately crossing the finish line in 1:47.36— a new Olympic best, over a second ahead of Csipes, who claimed the silver. Denmark's Emma Aastrand Orgensen claimed the bronze a few seconds later (1:49:76).
Carrington's teammate and fierce competitor in recent years, Aimee Fisher, finished fourth, just shy of the podium.
As the dust settles on the Paris 2024 Games, the question on everyone’s mind is whether Carrington will continue her Olympic journey. With eight golds to her name, she has little left to prove. Yet, the allure of competition remains.
"It’s pretty enticing to continue after this one," she hinted, leaving the door open for another chapter in her extraordinary career.
