Paris 2024 boxing: All results, as Chang Yuan claims gold medal in women’s 54kg weight class
Chang Yuan of the People's Republic of China won the gold medal in the women’s 54kg weight class of boxing, defeating Hatice Akbas of Türkiye by a 5-0 unanimous decision at Stade Roland-Garros on Thursday, 8 August.
It was a historic moment for Chang, who became the first female boxer from the People’s Republic of China to win a gold medal at the Olympic Games.
“I’ve given the team from China the best I could, the gold medal. Hopefully, others can do the same,” said the new Olympic champion. “It was so exciting to see the flag and hear the national anthem when I got my gold medal.”
Chang dominated her bout against Akbas from start to finish, losing only a single point from one judge.
Her fists delivered a barrage of quick, ranging blows, while her feet moved at lightning speed to keep her out of trouble. She fought with an air of invincibility and a swagger that seemed to foreshadow her coronation as Olympic champion.
She discussed the positive benefits of boxing for women while reflecting on her historic gold medal at the news conference after her match.
"Boxing can make women more confident because women are perceived as more fragile in terms of shape or strength. But boxing is an excellent sport for women to participate in,” Chang said.
Akbas, who had to settle for the silver medal, looked to put the bout behind her and focus on the future.
"It wasn't my best fight,” admitted the silver medallist. “I was tired and my opponent was more active and more dynamic. But it's not bad.”
She then predicted: "In the next Olympic Games, the colour of the medal will be gold."
Akbas joined Chang on the podium, along with Pang Cholmi of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and Im Aeji of the Republic of Korea, who both claimed bronze medals after losing their semi-final bouts against Chang and Akbas on 4 August.
