Asadkhuja Muydinkhujaev of Uzbekistan beat Marco Alonso Verde Alvarez of Mexico to win gold in men’s boxing 71kg at Olympic Games Paris 2024 on Friday, 9 August at Stade-Roland Garros.

The 23-year-old Muydinkhujaev took home gold at the 2023 world championships and has now won gold in his Olympic debut.

“I just want to thank all the people back home who have supported me. I feel happy," he said. “I’m now the world champion and the Olympic champion. That was my goal when I came to Paris."

Verde Alvarez became the first Mexican boxer to win a silver medal at the Games since 1984 despite striving for gold.

“It wasn’t the result I was expecting, but I’m very happy," Verde Alvarez said. "I went to try and win the fight in the third round as I knew I was down on points, but we just couldn’t do it. But that’s how life is.”

On 6 August, the USA’s Omari Jones and Great Britain’s Lewis Richardson earned bronze medals in men’s 71kg boxing.
