Paris 2024 boxing: All results, as Uzbekistan’s Lazizbek Mullojonov claims gold medal in men’s 92kg
Uzbekistan’s Lazizbek Mullojonov won the gold medal in the men’s 92kg weight class of boxing at the Olympic Games Paris 2024, defeating Loren Berto Alfonso Dominguez of Azerbaijan in a 5-0 unanimous decision at Stade Roland-Garros on Friday, 9 August.
The Uzbek boxer outclassed his opponent, only losing two points from the judges during the entire bout.
“This was my childhood dream to get the gold medal at an Olympic Games,” said Mullojonov. “There have been some difficult times, but I never lost hope. Now I can go home a champion.”
He certainly entered the ring with the swagger of the champion, taking control of the bout early in the first period.
Mullojonov delivered heavy, ranging blows with his upper body, pinning Alfonso Dominguez against the ropes with his unceasing attacks.
Alfonso Dominguez responded with his own rapid combinations and counter blows, but it wasn’t enough to sway the judges in his favour with the gold medal on the line.
Both boxers fought valiantly in the final period, giving the crowd something to cheer before Mullojonov was proclaimed the victor.
When asked the secret to his success at the post-match press conference, he said: “You have to keep working, just keep working, just keep training.
“Never skip a day, never take a break. Not even for a day. You will get a gold medal.”
Alfonso Dominguez was disappointed by the result, but he acknowleded the strength of his opponent in the gold medal match.
“It was a disappointing night,” said the silver medallist. “It wasn’t my best night and I didn’t fight very well. My opponent was very good and now I think I’m just going to carry on.”
He joined Mullojonov on the podium to receive his silver medal, along with Spain’s Enmanuel Reyes Pla and Tajikistan’s Davlat Boltaev, who earned bronze medals for their efforts at Paris 2024 after losing their semi-final bouts to the Azeri and Uzbek boxers.
