Paris 2024 boxing: All results, as Chinese Taipei's Lin Yu Ting claims gold medal in women’s 57kg weight category
Lin Yu Ting of Chinese Taipei won the gold medal in the women’s 57kg weight class of boxing at the Olympic Games Paris 2024, defeating Julia Szeremeta of Poland in a 5-0 unanimous decision at Stade Roland-Garros on Saturday, 10 August.
It was a historic moment for Lin, who became the first boxer from Chinese Taipei to win a gold medal at the Olympic Games.
“During the fight, I saw images flashing and I thought about the beginning of my career when I started boxing,” said the newly minted gold medalist. “All the different practices, times I got injured and competitors I fought against, all these images flashed in my head.
“There were times of great pain, times of great joy. I cried [at the victory ceremony] because I represented my country and I got the gold medal.”
Lin won the judges' scorecards in all three rounds, not dropping a single point to Szeremeta.
“The fact that she could participate in the Olympics already is a testament to her skills,” Lin said of her opponent in the final bout. “Julia is so young, and she managed to get into the finals. To me, that’s already amazing.”
Szeremeta fought valiantly in the final bout, ending an impressive tournament with a fighting spirit.
The 20-year-old reflected on her journey to Paris 2024, stating, “I didn’t make it as I expected. I came here to get gold, and I didn’t. But, I’m only 20 and it’s not the end.”
She added: “I’m very happy that I am the first Polish boxer to win Olympic silver, and I am very happy as well that it was the first final after 44 years.”
She joined Lin on the podium after a final bout overflowing with history. The pair of finalists were joined by bronze medallists Esra Yildiz Kahraman of Türkiye and Nesthy Petecio of the Philippines, who earned medals after losing their semi-final bouts to Lin and Szeremeta, respectively.
