Paris 2024 athletics: All results, as Spain’s Jordan Alejandro Díaz Fortún leaps to Olympic gold in men’s triple jump

Jordan Alejandro Díaz Fortún upset some big names in athletics to win Spain’s first-ever Olympic gold medal in the men’s triple jump competition at Paris 2024 on Friday, 9 August.

The 23-year-old Díaz Fortún took the lead with an opening jump of 17.86 metres and stayed there for the remainder of the contest.

Defending champion Pedro Pichardo of Portugal came within a hair’s breadth of knocking Díaz Fortún off his perch with his second-round leap of 17.84m. In the end, Pichardo had to settle for silver with Italy’s Andy Díaz Hernández taking bronze with 17.64m.

Díaz Fortún was head and shoulders above his challengers producing a flawless sequence of jumps – 17.86m, 17.64m, 17.85m, 17.84m, 17.25m – to highlight his dominance on the night.

The Cuban-born star came into the Games with a massive world lead of 18.18m which placed him third on the world all-time list behind Jonathan Edwards and Christian Taylor.

Díaz Fortún now boasts an impressive collection of titles with the Olympic gold being the jewel in his crown. The rising star already owned a host of international age-group level titles including World Under-18, U-20 and Youth Olympics.
