The Republic of Korea found the bullseye and struck gold in the mixed team archery competition during a blustery final at the Esplanade des Invalides on 2 August.
The pair of Lim Sihyeon and Kim Woojin out shot Germany’s Michelle Kroppen and Florian Unruh in three straight sets, winning a windy gold medal match 6-0 in set points. Team USA won bronze after defeating India.
It was the second time the mixed team event was held at the Olympic Games, and the second time the Republic of Korea have won it.
“We’re glad about our second consecutive win, but we're also really glad about the three consecutive wins for our men's team and, of course, our 10 consecutive wins for our women's team,” said Kim Woojin.
The Republic of Korea has been unstoppable in archery at the Olympic Games Paris 2024, winning all three events held so far. However, their mixed team performance was the most dominant yet.
After surviving a close match against Chinese Taipei in the 1/8 Elimination Round, Lim and Kim breezed through the quarter-finals, semi-finals and gold medal match, dropping only two sets in the process.
Kim was in particularly steady form, firing only one arrow into the red rings over four matches. He registered twenty 10s in the elimination matches to end the competition with a flourish of accuracy.
“The weather was a bit concerning because it started to change, and I feel like not just for us, but also for our competitors as well, that made the game more challenging,” explained Kim. "But we've been trying to shoot better, and trying to get the scores we wanted. So we're really glad we were able to end up with a good result."
Kroppen and Unruh were also in superb form, frequently finding the center rings of the target in their elimination matches. Unfortunately, Kroppen struggled to find that form in the gold medal match, residing in the red rings for much of the match.
“The wind made it difficult for us,” noted Unruh. “In my opinion, Michelle was shooting in the right direction, but the wind had other plans in mind, and the Koreans capitalised on our mistakes.”
Kroppen was still pleased with the silver medal, adding, “At first, it is disappointing when you're in the venue and the others are celebrating. But then you realise you have an Olympic medal, and it's amazing.”
It was also a magical day for Casey Kaufhold, who became the first female archer from the US to win a medal, since the women’s team won a bronze medal at the Olympic Games Seoul 1988.
She won the bronze medal match alongside five-time olympian Brady Ellison, beating India’s Ankita Bhakat and Dhiraj Bommadevara 6-2 in set points.
