Panghal, Kaushik script history at World Boxing Championships
The Indian pugilists have assured India of two medals in Yekaterinburg.
Indian boxers Amit Panghal and Manish Kaushik have made history by assuring India of two medals at the Men’s World Boxing Championships in Yekaterinburg, Russia.
Having won four medals in the history of the tournament, this will be the first time that more than one Indian boxer will return with a medal from a single edition of the World Championships.
Maiden triumph
Asian Games champion Amit Panghal was the first to secure a podium spot by defeating Philippines’ Carlo Paalam in the Men's Fly 52kg category in a split decision (4-1).
The 23-year-old Indian pugilist trailed after the first round, but took control in the second and the third.
He will now face local boxer Saken Bibossinov in the semi finals.
Kaushik delivers
Manish Kaushik advanced through to the last four by getting the better of Brazil’s Wanderson de Oliveira in the 63kg category through a unanimous decision (5-0).
Kaushik will now take on the top seeded Cuban Andy Cruz Gomezin the semi-final.
Sanjeet bows out
After putting up a strong fight against Uzbekistan’s Sanjar Tursunov on Monday, debutant Sanjeet Kumar lost to Ecuador's seventh-seeded Julio Castillo Torres in the 91kg category on a split decision (1-4).
Outclassed
Fifth-seeded Kavinder Singh Bisht bowed out of the tournament following a unanimous (0-5) decision against England’s Peter McGrail in the 57kg category.
