Osmar Olvera delivered an almost perfect performance to land men's 3m springboard diving gold at the Pan American Games 2023 on Monday (23 October).
The Mexican won five from six rounds to claim his second title of the event, having won the 1m springboard on Saturday (21 October).
Luis Felipe Uribe of Colombia took silver, while USA's Jack Ryan completed the podium with bronze.
There were high hopes from the legions of Mexican fans for Olvera in Santiago’s Aquatics Centre, after the 19-year-old landed two silvers in this year’s Fukuoka World Championships.
Showing maturity well beyond his years, Olvera's first three dives were machine-like in their precision, taking top spot each time.
The pick of the bunch was his reverse 3.5 somersaults tuck in round two which was awarded an astonishing 91.00.
There was nothing robotic about the Mexican fans, however, who cheered louder with every attempt creating another incredible atmosphere.
Meanwhile, there was a titanic battle for second place between Ryan, Uribe, and Cuba’s Frank Rosales.
All three men showed moments of brilliance across their dives but struggled for consistency.
Ryan looked to have sealed second with his final round dive worth 73.50, but Uribe saved his best dive until last to clinch the silver medal with a 78.75 effort.
Olvera, already well ahead in first, completed his victory with two mesmerising dives worth 98.80 and 91.65.
