Olympic Esports Series 2023: Tim "UOL Pepitõ" Carpentier wins Virtual Regatta inshore sailing event
France's Pepitõ was a picture of consistency throughout the sailing series before winning the final race to score 26.5 points.
France's Tim "UOL Pepitõ" Carpentier is the inaugural Virtual Regatta sailing inshore winner of the Olympic Esports Series in Singapore after proving to be the most consistent performer.
Pepitõ recorded three top-threes in the preliminary series of seven races to get his final off to a strong start.
Going into the final race, Pepitõ led on 24.5 points from José "Magic - JoseGodi" Godinho's 30. With the 5.5-point lead, Pepitõ knew a top-three finish would be enough to win the event. JoseGodi, meanwhile, needed to win and for Pepitõ to finish fourth or fifth.
It was Cavan "Cavan Fyans" Fyans who took the early lead in the final race, but he took a penalty shortly before the first mark, allowing Pepitõ to turn in the lead of the fleet. And the Frenchman never let his lead slip to take his first race victory of the regatta in the final race, winning on a total low score of 26.5 points.
JoseGodi, however, struggled in the final race and fell to the back of the fleet, from where he was not able to recover. Francisco "Magic - ChicoPMelo" Melo and Cavan Fyans finished the race second and third respectively to move themselves up in the overall standings to the bronze and silver trophy positions behind Pepitõ.
There was also a trophy presentation for the Olympic Esports Series Virtual Regatta offshore race, held entirely online earlier this year. The top three finishers, Baptiste "Baptiste_Rep-PVe" Renaut, Xavier "Koky-PVe" Coquiard, and Aurélie "BlackPanther BSP" Martin – all from France –, received their trophies in person in Singapore.
That offshore race, a monthlong adventure, in the end was decided by a mere TWO seconds. Renaut finished in 30 days, 13 hours, 27 minutes and 11 seconds, with Coquiard right on his heels finishing in 30 days, 13 hours 27 minutes and 13 seconds.
