Families of shooting violence victims thank tennis’ Naomi Osaka

Japanese tennis player Naomi Osaka held of surging American Shelby Rogers Tuesday night at the U.S. Open, advancing to the semi-finals after a 6-3, 6-4 victory. Osaka is the 2018 U.S. Open Champion and 2019 Australian winner.

Throughout the U.S. Open, the 22-year-old has worn a different mask in memory of Black individuals whose deaths have led to marches for racial justice around the globe. In Tuesday’s post-match interview with ESPN, the families of Trayvon Martin and Ahmaud Arbery thanked Osaka.

"I just want to say thank you to Naomi Osaka for representing Trayvon Martin on your customized mask and also for Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor," said Martin’s mother Sybrina Fulton on ESPN. "We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Continue to do well. Continue to kick butt at the US Open."

Arbery’s father Marcus echoed Fulton. "God bless you for what you're doing and you supporting our family with my son. My family really, really appreciates that, and God bless you."

“I was just trying really hard not to cry," Osaka said in a post-match press conference. "It's extremely touching that they would feel touched by what I'm doing."

British gymnast Ellie Downie’s complaint dismissed

Earlier this year, 2016 Olympian and two-time World Championships Ellie Downie added her voice to a growing movement of gymnasts in the United States, Great Britain and elsewhere about abusive training methods in her sport, saying that she was ‘weight-shamed’ by a nutritionist at the English Institute of Sport (EIS).

Downie said she could “vividly recall being told as a young teenager at a national camp to lose 6kg in two weeks or ‘there would be consequences.’” The 2019 World bronze medalist on vault also said she’d been required to “send daily pictures of me in my underwear to ensure I wasn’t lying.”

Following an internal review conducted by the EIS, however, the complaint has been dismissed.

“All relevant individuals were interviewed by a senior EIS member of staff and the subsequent report was submitted for a full review to an external independent investigator,” read a statement from EIS. “The conclusion from this process is that the complaint was not upheld.”

Downie responded on Twitter. “I’ve not done this to satisfy myself. This is to stop it happening to all those young gymnasts out there,” she wrote. “Yes sometimes you may need nutritional help to improve your performance, but that’s not what this was! And it can’t continue. But honestly this is why we haven’t spoken before.”

Tour de France stage 10 winner Sam Bennett: “I’m just in shock.”

Irish cyclist Sam Bennett was overcome with emotion Tuesday after winning stage 10 of the Tour de France.

"I forgot to throw the bike at the line in the moment and I thought he might have got me. It hasn't hit me. I thought I'd be in a flood of tears but I'm just in shock," Bennett said afterward.

The Irishman had finished fourth, second and third in the Tour’s bunch sprints previously. His joy on full display in a post win interview.

“I just want to thank everyone who’s been involved, I just want to thank the whole team,” he said, fighting back tears. “You dream of it and you never think it will happen. It did and I don’t know… it took a while for it to hit me.”
