It came down to the fourth and final boulder climb for Austria's Nicolai Uznik at the European sport climbing Championships in Munich, Germany, on Saturday 13 August.

The 22-year-old had a nervous wait as Olympian Adam Ondra made his final attempt to improve his bronze medal, but was unsuccessful.

Uznik was one of six athletes to put on a thrilling final for the hundreds of spectators gathered at Konigsplatz.

The Austrian claimed gold after making less attempts than his close rivals. He made two tops and two zones, as did France's Sam Avezou who took silver with Czech Republic's Ondra winning bronze.

Speaking after the triumph, Uznik said, "It's an incredible feeling. It's my first medal at a big event in the adults category and I honestly cannot figure out what just happened. And I'm just super happy."

His success is even more impressive given he had some issues with his arm muscles.

"It was pretty bad," he said. "I recently got COVID and my body is still not in the best shape so I got cramps first in my left arm and then in my right one and it just kept getting worse. Lucky my physio was there to help me a little bit, but yeah I just tried to give it my all and I'm super happy it worked out."

The competition continues on Sunday August 14, where we will see just how much skin the climbers have left. The men's lead and women's boulder medals will be awarded.
