Amidst excitement and adrenaline, the young canoeists tested their skills against each other, and against tomorrow’s stars. The U23 event saw some familiar YOG graduates show the next generation how it’s done. Current senior European Champion and last year’s winner, Jiri Prskavec (CZE), was beaten to the gold by young Frenchman Mathieu Biazizzo, while Jessica Fox remains at the top of the leader board in the women’s category.
With a number of junior athletes identified as ones to watch, we caught up with rising talent Angus Thompson, who has his sights set on Nanjing. “It will be very hard to qualify”, said the young Aussie, “but if I do, it would give me a lot of confidence for the future.” He cites fellow Australian canoeist Jessica Fox - YOG champion who went on to win silver at the London 2012 Olympic Games - as an inspiration on how goals can be achieved at such a young age.
