We've reached the sweet 16 of the Olympic tennis event.

And No.2 seed Naomi Osaka, the highest-ranked woman remaining in the singles draw at Tokyo 2020, will meet Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic Tuesday (27 July) for a spot in the quarter-finals.

It's the first meeting between Japanese superstar Osaka and Vondrousova.

Osaka, the four-time major champion who had the honour of lighting the Olympic cauldron at Friday's Opening Ceremony, has looked in fierce form so far this Games, beating Zheng Saisai and then Viktorija Golubic, dropping just 10 games in four sets played.

Vondrousova beat No.16 seed Kiki Bertens in the first round, 6-4 3-6 6-4, then triumphed over Mihaela Buzarnescu 6-1 6-2 to make the last 16.

Vondrousova, runner-up at the French Open in 2019 to Ashleigh Barty, is known for her all-court game and lefty spin, which she'll use to try and counter Osaka's offensive, powerful play.

World No.1 Barty lost in the first round, leaving No.2 Osaka as the top remaining seed. On Tuesday, No.3 Aryna Sabalenka, No.6 Iga Swiatek and No.10 Petra Kvitova all lost.

Five of the top eight seeds have made the third round, including Osaka, No.4 Elina Svitolina, No.5 Karolina Pliskova, No.7 Garbiñe Muguruza and No.8 Barbora Krejcikova, the French Open champ in 2021.
