Mixed-gender events set to thrill fans at Gangwon 2024
The mixed gender events at Asia's first Winter Youth Olympic Games replace the mixed-NOC events from previous editions. Here are the key things you need to know.
The Youth Olympic Games (YOG) continues to be a pioneering place of innovation.
Gangwon 2024 will welcome the first mixed-gender events at a Winter YOG.
Previous Youth Olympic Games editions featured mixed-NOC events, seeing athletes from different countries team-up to compete together. Those events were first introduced at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games at Singapore 2010, before making their winter debut at Innsbruck 2012 in curling, figure skating, and short track speed skating. They featured at the last three Winter Games as non-medal events.
When the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced the changes in 2021, it's Executive Board hoped that the mixed-gender disciplines would help place greater focus on young elite athlete development pathways and ensure consistency with the Summer Youth Olympic Games programme for Dakar 2026.
At Gangwon 2024, the mixed-gender events will replace the mixed-NOC events in Nordic combined, cross-country skiing, biathlon, short track, ski jumping, alpine skiing, and freestyle skiing.
The fourth edition of the Winter Youth Olympic Games is being held from 19 January to 1 February.
