Met Gala 2024: Olympians and top athletes show off red carpet style
Olympians from across the sports world arrived in their finest for the 2024 Met Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York’s Upper East Side, held on the evening of Monday, 6 May.
The dress code for this exclusive soiree, "A Garden in Time," is based on the exhibit's theme, "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion."
Photographers and journalists lined the steps outside the prestigious annual fundraising gala, where celebrities, models, and a who's-who of celebrity athletes made their way inside the notoriously exclusive and secretive party.
Sports stars and Olympians are regularly among the invited attendees. Past athletes making a splash with their fashion A-game have included Simon Biles, Shaun White, Eileen Gu, Sha’Carri Richardson, Nyjah Huston, Naomi Osaka, Noah Lyles, Maria Sharapova, Lindsey Vonn, Allyson Felix, Serena and Venus Williams, Megan Rapinoe, Nia Dennis and Dwayne Wade among others.
Met Gala attendees in sport who made a splash in 2024 include:
Serena Williams glittered in gold, perhaps in a nod to her four Olympic gold medals. The tennis champion's look included black gloves and diamond jewels. Sister Venus Williams was also in attendance (see below).
Brooklyn Nets forward Ben Simmons shared a literal take on "A Garden in Time" dress code with an oversized clock briefcase and an overall Mad Hatter-esque look courtesy of designer Thom Browne.
Simmons has previously declared his intentions to play basketball for the Boomers, representing Australia at the Olympics Paris 2024, but has since been sidelined with an injury postponing his planned Olympic debut.
WNBA rising star Angel Reese celebrated her 22nd birthday at the Met Gala wearing a custom dress featuring a plunging neckline, sequins and feathers. The stylish LSU women’s basketball superstar recently made headlines by declaring her entry into the WNBA draft via a fashion layout in Vogue magazine. This announcement was inspired by Serena Williams choice to announce her retirement in the pages of Vogue. Here's hoping the two share a moment during the night's festivities.
Power couple, NBA Legend Dwyane Wade made a lilac splash alongside actress Gabrielle Union in a mermaid-esque Michael Kors sequin gown. Wade has made repeat appearances at the Met Gala over the years.
Dwyane Wade most notably led the Beijing 2008 USA basketball team in scoring to earn gold for USA.
Tennis superstar Venus Wiliams served a winning look in a Balenciaga-draped metallic gown. The five-time Olympic medalist has been spotted frequently at fashion galas and openings across the city
LPGA star player and Tokyo 2020 gold medalist Nelly Korda lit up The Met in an Oscar de la Renta gown. The 25-year-old has won all but one event of the six golf events she has teed off at in 2024.
