2023 FIS Alpine Ski World Championships, men's Super G preview: Schedule and ones to watch on Thursday 9 February
Marco Odermatt, Aleksander Aamodt Kilde and Vincent Kriechmayr are the hot favourites in the first men's speed race at these Worlds. Find out who could be the outsiders for a medal in our preview.
Day four at the 2023 FIS Alpine Ski World Championships will see some of the world's fastest speedsters in action on Thursday (9 February) for the men's Super G event .
On the challenging 'L'Eclipse' course in Courchevel, reigning world champion Vincent Kriechmayr of Austria led the field at last year's World Cup Finals, finishing in front of 2022 overall World Cup winner Marco Odermatt of Switzerland, in a 1-2 repeat of the downhill results from the previous day.
Kriechmayr and Odermatt will be among the hot favourites also at the 2023 Worlds, along with Norway's Olympic bronze medallist Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, who in March ended just outside the podium in both speed events in Courchevel.
And if the results of the Super G run in the combined are a good gauge of the current form of the racers, home favourite Alexis Pinturault - who clocked the fastest time on Tuesday before winning gold - and Austria's Marco Schwarz could also be considered contenders for a medal.
Men's Super G: Medal Favourites
Marco Odermatt (SUI): This season the overall World Cup leader has reached the podium in all the six Super G races he's entered and with four wins, a second and a third place he also tops the discipline's standings.
Aleksander Aamodt Kilde (NOR): The ever-smiling Attacking Viking is the reigning World Cup Super G globe holder and has been battling it out with Odermatt for the supremacy in this discipline. The 30-year-old is second in the Super G rankings with two wins and two second places, although in the last World Cup event in Cortina d'Ampezzo he recorded a DNF.
Vincent Kriechmayr (AUT): After the sudden retirement of Olympic champion Matthias Mayer, Austria's gold medallist from Cortina 2021 is carrying the expectations of his ski-mad nation. The 31-year-old's last World Cup Super G win came at Courchevel last March, but he has been ultra-consistent in Super G this season with five top-five finishes including second at Bormio.
Alexis Pinturault (FRA): The newly-crowned combined world champion is ready to impress again in front of the home fans. This season the Frenchman has stepped on the Super G podium in Beaver Creek, USA, and also recorded a fifth (Bormio) and sixth place (Cortina d'Ampezzo).
Dominik Paris (ITA): The Italian speedster, who took gold at Are 2019, has recently shown glimpses of his old Super G form in Cortina d'Ampezzo, reaching the podium for the first time in three years.
