The men’s 4x400m relay final will bring athletics at Tokyo 2020 to a close at the Olympic Stadium on Saturday evening.

Rio 2016 champions USA will defend their title against the likes of Rio 2016 silver medallists Jamaica and 2019 world championships bronze medallists Belgium.

The USA won the first heat with a time of 2:57.77 followed by Botswana at 2:58.33 (a new African record) and Trinidad and Tobago at 2:58.60.

Poland aced the second heat with 2:58.55 ahead of Jamaica at 2:59.29 and Belgium at 2:59.37.

The top three each from both heats qualify directly for the final. The first heat produced the remaining two finalists with the fastest timings – Italy at 2:58.91 and the Netherlands at 2:59.06.

India, who set a new Asian record, were fourth in the second heat at 3:00.25. The Indian quartet of Muhammed Anas, Noah Nirmal Tom, Arokia Rajiv and Amoj Jacob posted the best timing outside the top-eight.

Trevor Stewart, Randolph Ross, Bryce Deadmon and Vernon Norwood ran the heat for the USA. Michael Cherry and Michael Norman are the other runners in the USA squad.

Demish Gaye, Jaheel Hyde, Karayme Bartley and Nathon Allen were the heat runners for Jamaica, who also have Christopher Taylor and Sean Bailey.

For Belgium, Alexander Doom, Jonathan Sacoor, Dylan Borlee and Jonathan Borlee competed in the heat. They also have a third Borlee brother – Kevin - in their squad.

Teams are allowed to choose up to six members in the squad.

The world record in the men’s 4x400m relay is 2:54.29, set way back in 1993, and the Olympic record is 2:55.39, set at Beijing 2008, both by the USA.
