Olympic bronze medal-winning boxer, Lovlina Borgohain, has been handed a direct entry into the Indian team for the AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships 2021.
The Boxing Federation of India (BFI), on Tuesday, announced that while Lovlina Borgohain will be a part of the Indian contingent for the worlds later this year, the other members will be selected following the women’s national boxing championships in Hisar, Haryana.
With her place at the world meet secured, the 24-year-old Lovlina Borgohain is likely to skip the nationals which will be held from October 21-27.
“The gold-medallists in each weight category will represent India in the AIBA Women’s World Championships except 69kg (as) Tokyo Olympics bronze-medallist Lovlina Borgohain will see direct qualification for the world championships,” the BFI stated.
Moreover, the silver medal winners at the nationals will also be called for the national camp ahead of the worlds.
The bronze medal winners meanwhile will feature in a trial where they will fight it out for a place in the national camp with medal winners from the previous three editions of the national championships.
The women’s world championships is scheduled for December in Istanbul, Turkey. The exact dates of the event are still to be announced.
Lovlina Borgohain is a two-time medallist at the worlds, having won bronze in the 69kg division in 2018 as well as 2019.
