Like the 2020 edition, and this year's race, the London Marathon will once again be moved from April to October.

The 2022 London Marathon will take place in Sunday 2 October 2022, organisers have confirmed.

It will be the third successive year that the athletics event will not be hosted in its traditional timeslot of April.

"We believe that by moving the 2022 event to October we give ourselves the best chances of welcoming the world to the streets of London," explained Event Director of London Marathon Events, Hugh Brasher.

Last year's mass participation run was postponed due to the ongoing pandemic and its subsequent restrictions.

Only elite competitors were able to race, and did so in laps around St. James' Park rather than the traditional road route from Blackheath to The Mall.

The 2021 London Marathon, scheduled to go ahead next month on Sunday 3 October, will return to the original 26.2 mile route and is expected to host up to 50,000 runners.
