Indian archers will target Paris 2024 Olympics quotas at the Asian Archery Championships 2023, which starts in Bangkok, Thailand this Sunday.

The archery event in Bangkok will be the third Olympic qualifier for Indian recurve archers. The top-placed teams per gender at the Asian Archery Championships will earn three Paris 2024 quota places each.

Indian archers could not secure Olympic quotas at the World Archery Championships and Asian Games earlier this year.

At the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, the Indian men's recurve team of Atanu Das, Dhiraj Bommadevara and Tushar Shelke won the silver medal while Bhajan Kaur, Ankita Bhakat and Simranjeet Kaur bagged a bronze in the women’s team event.

While the women’s trio have retained their place for the Asian Championships, Atanu Das has been replaced by another Olympian, Tarundeep Rai, in the men’s team at Bangkok.

India have sent 16 archers for the Asian Archery Championships — eight each in recurve and non-Olympic compound archery. The Indian compound team will be spearheaded by Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Ojas Pravin Deotale, the women's and men's individual Asian Games champions, respectively.

Abhishek Verma, who won silver at the Asian Games in Hangzhou and the 17-year-old world champion Aditi Swami are also in the squad. Indian compound archers cleanswept all five gold medals at the Asian Games 2023. Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Ojas Pravin Deotale won three golds each.

The Asian Archery Championships will be followed by the Asian individual Olympic qualifiers for archery at the same venue. The individual qualifiers will have two Olympic quotas on offer in each of the men’s and women’s recurve archery events.
