7:45pm - Mikaela Shiffrin: "I wrote a song"

Mikaela Shiffrin - double Olympic gold medallist, five-time world champion, 66 World Cup wins.

Oh and she sings too.

Inspired by the response to the spread of coronavirus COVID-19, and particularly by the people in the Barilla food factory in Italy who continue going to the factory despite fear of contagion.

Because people need to eat.

Here's what she posted along with this beautiful song below:

"We are witnessing incredible acts of kindness and selflessness every day. The doctors and nurses helping the ill, and continuing to help the millions who have sickness and injuries not even related to this specific virus."

"The thousands of retired health professionals who have volunteered their services to aid the hospitals strained in space and resources. Those testing and developing treatments and vaccinations to this and every other disease."

"The firefighters, police force, and every other kind of public service worker and defender out there. Our service people from the Army, Navy, Air Force and beyond who unable to return home though they may feel torn in half by their obligation to protect our countries from afar and their longing to protect their families from home.

"In Italy, a lot of the food plants are slowing down production significantly because the workers are worried about going to work, even though these plants are held to an incredibly high sanitation standard.

"Yet, these food plants staying in production is essential for the general public to continue to have access to food... So I did a really small thing, in the grand scheme of everything."

"I wrote a song— inspired by the plant employees of my @barilla family continuing to put the public needs ahead of their own needs and fears, but it is a message to everyone.

Thank you."

"It's now six o'clock," says Eliud Kipchoge in a video he recorded for the BBC.

"This is the third day since we broke up from camp due to coronavirus," says the only man in history to run a sub-two hour marathon and ever the team player.

"It's really hard to train alone because I value teamwork."

"It's a mutual interest, it helps me so much," added the reigning Olympic marathon champ who is staying fit by running alone at home in Kenya while in quarantine.

"But all in all is that I am keeping the directives and actually honouring what is required as Eliud is concerned."

"I am trying to quarantine myself, stay with the family and make sure that I don't mingle with a lot of people."

"But all in all is that I am trying to keep more fit myself and wake up as early as six o'clock to go for a run and make sure I stay fit."

Here's how Kipchoge won his first Olympic gold medal at Rio 2016:

3:01pm Jesse Owens' German friend

Today, on the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, we remember the incredible Olympic friendship that set an example of racial equality and respect to the world. ⠀
⠀
Jesse Owens and Luz Long became friends during the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, despite the racial inequality in both of their home countries at the time.

After the Olympics ended, they continued their friendship through letters, even during the hardest years of World War II.

After Long’s passing in 1943, Owens travelled to Germany to deliver an important final message to Long’s eldest son, Kai, celebrating the life of his fellow athlete and friend.

Later, he was best man at Kai Long’s wedding. ⠀
⠀
The Olympic Games have always been a place where people of different races, countries and creeds can come together in a show of excellence, respect and friendly competition.
