Comprising Sif Bendix Madsen of Denmark, Alessio Crociani of Italy, Switzerland’s Anja Weber, and Alexandre Montez of Portugal, Europe 1 took the gold in front of a large and enthusiastic crowd at Green Park in Bosques de Palermo.
Second in the men’s individual competition earlier in the week, Montez was delighted to have been a part of the event: “I was really happy to compete and I liked the team dynamic a lot.”
The European four’s combined time of 1:26:12 gave them victory by 20 seconds from an Oceania 1 team made up of Charlotte Derbyshire and Joshua Ferris of Australia, and Dylan McCullough and Brea Roderick of New Zealand.
Europe 3 (Marie Horn and Henry Graf of Germany, Emilie Noyer of France, and Spain’s Igor Mikhailova) came in two minutes and 47 seconds behind the winners to claim the bronze.
The event comprised six Europe teams in all, five Americas teams, two Asia teams and one Oceania, Africa and World team each. International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach was at the finish line to applaud the athletes for their efforts.
