Ever wondered how tennis ace Leander Paes went about his business to clinch India’s first individual Olympic medal in over four decades? Or how PV Sindhu gathered herself after the heart-breaking loss in her women’s singles final at Rio 2016?

Olympic Channel in its latest offering, Great Olympic Moments, will try to answer many such questions as it revisits some of the iconic moments from the Games’ history since Mexico City 1968.

The special episodes, which began on July 24, will run till August 9 to coincide with the original dates of the Tokyo Summer Games which were deferred due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The series will feature Olympic legends like Nadia Comaneci, Michael Phelps, Simone Biles, Usain Bolt, Cathy Freeman and Haile Gebrselassie, apart from the Indian greats speaking about their best Olympic moments.

The episode on the bronze medal match between Leander Paes and Brazil’s Fernando Meligeni from Atlanta 1996 will be released on August 1, while the epic women’s singles final from Rio 2016 featuring PV Sindhu and Carolina Marin of Spain will be available a day later.

The champions tale

Leander Paes, who made his Olympic debut at Barcelona 1992, had gone into the Olympics in 1996 with a sole purpose of clinching a medal for this country.

In an interaction with the Olympic Channel a few months back, the Indian star spoke about his build-up for the Games at Atlanta 1996.

“You know, I prepared for Atlanta very specifically. As soon as (1992) Barcelona finished, I spent four years preparing for Atlanta,” he had said.

“I even took time off the Pro tour to play in tournaments that have high altitude. It resembled the conditions that were there in Stone Mountain, Atlanta. I played in all the hard courts with high altitude in South America.”

Meanwhile, for PV Sindhu, it was a case of calmly negotiating her opponents at Rio 2016 before eventually falling at the final hurdle against the Spanish great.
