Former Indian badminton player Jwala Gutta married Tamil actor and producer Vishnu Vishal in Hyderabad on Thursday. The private wedding ceremony was held at Jwala’s home.
Jwala Gutta, a 2012 London Olympics women's doubles quarter-finalist, has been dating Tamil actor Vishnu Vishal for almost three years. The two got engaged in September after Vishnu Vishal proposed marriage on the shuttler’s 37th birthday.
The couple had announced their wedding date earlier this month.
Jwala Gutta was earlier married to fellow Indian shuttler Chetan Anand but divorced in 2011. It is Vishnu Vishal's second marriage as well.
Vishal got married to film producer Ragini Nataraj in 2010 but separated in 2018. The couple have a son born in 2017.
Jwala Gutta, a doubles specialist, is a two-time Olympian and won the 2010 Commonwealth Games women's doubles gold medal with Ashwini Ponnappa. This was India's first women's doubles gold at the Commonwealth event.
Jwala also won the women's doubles bronze medal at the 2011 World Championships - a first podium finish at the event for any Indian pair.
Over the course of her career extending from 1999 to 2017, Jwala Gutta won several other accolades as well and is often regarded as one of the finest doubles players to come out of India. She was also conferred with the Arjuna Award in 2011.
Jwala Gutta, however, has been inactive on the court since 2017, dedicating her life to nurturing young talents at her badminton academy in Hyderabad.
Off the court, Jwala Gutta is known to be a fierce advocate for women's rights.
