Paris 2024 Paralympics | Para Athletics: Key Takeaways from the First Morning of Competition

The first Para athletics title of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games went to Brazilian Julio Cesar Agripino dos Santos in the men's 5,000m T11. In a tight race, he set a new world record with a time of 14:48.85, narrowly defeating Japan's Kenya Karasawa and his compatriot Yeltsin Jacques, the former world record holder.
In the women's shot put F41, Tunisia's Raoua Tlili (10.40 m) won her third consecutive Paralympic title, ahead of Kubaro Khakimova (10.36 m) and Antonella Ruiz Diaz (9.58 m). The gold medal in the women's T11 long jump was claimed by Uzbekistan's Asila Mirzayorova (5.24 m), followed by China's Zhou Guohua (4.91 m) and Spain's Alba Garcia Falagan (4.76 m). France's Delya Boulaghlem finished in fifth place with a jump of 4.48 m.
The other three titles of the morning went to China's Zhou Xia (13.58 seconds), who won the women's 100m T35 ahead of Guo Qianqian and Preethi Pal; Colombia's Jose Gregorio Lemos Rivas, who took gold in the men's javelin throw F38 (63.81 m) ahead of Vladyslav Bilyi and An Dongquan; and Colombia's Erica Maria Castano Salazar, who won the women's discus throw F55, finishing ahead of Dong Feixia and Rosa Maria Guerrero Cazares.
In the men's 100m T37 heats, Valentin Bertrand from Île-de-France clocked 12.46 seconds but missed out on a spot in the final. In the men's 400m T52, Belgian athlete Maxime Carabin set a new Paralympic record with a time of 54.48 seconds.
