Benjamin Daviet was in contention to go down in French sporting history, but this Sunday's duet with Perle Bouge failed to secure a place on the podium in the PR2 para-rowing mixed double sculls.

At around midday on Sunday, a historic moment for French sport could have happened. At the Centre Nautique de Vaires-sur-Marnes, Benjamin Daviet had the opportunity to become the first Frenchman to win a winter and summer Paralympic medal. Competing with Perle Bouge in the final of the PR2 para-rowing mixed double sculls at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, he eventually had to settle for fifth place.

Benjamin Daviet, five-time Paralympic champion in Nordic Para-skiing, lamented: "We had a chance of winning this medal. We had the worst run of the season and it wasn't the result we were looking for. Apart from the medal, we wanted to have a good race, but it was a bad row from start to finish. That's what's so frustrating."

"It's been a lot of travelling, a lot of tiredness, but also a lot of happiness shared with Perle [Bouge], whom I'd like to thank for taking me all the way to the final of the Paralympic Games, even if it didn't end as we'd hoped," explains Benjamin Daviet.

"We started the adventure in November with the winter season already underway for me. It was complicated to work well together and it wasn't until April that we really got going. Despite this result, we can be proud of ourselves for reaching the final with only 60 days on the water together."

As for the future, Benjamin Daviet does not know whether he will continue with Para rowing. What is certain, however, is that he will now, after a rest, set about preparing for the Para cross-country skiing and Para biathlon World Championships scheduled for February 2025. "What I also know is that I'm going to the Milano/Cortina 2026 Paralympic Games on skis", he concluded.

Sébastien Vieilledent, National Technical Director for French rowing, said: "I'm enormously proud, out of respect and admiration for this multiple Paralympic medallist. He has contributed through his way of being. It's always extremely rich to share experiences from different sports."
